| Club announcements- Announcements: 1) April 4th Store of the Year Dinner for Diablo Foods 2) Rossmoor Rotary Water Fountain Dedication April 6th, check with Gene Wilson 935-5785 for. 3) Contributions for Rotary Foundation will be a non-Foundation event. Local clubs will handle this, looking for 100% of members to participate. See Ron Wake. 4) Ron Wake wife Sharon working with Japanese Cultural Community Center of Nor Cal who is acting as a clearing house for donations to Japan. There are three ways we can donate to the Japanese relief. The Red Cross, Rotary International and the JCCCNC. 5) District Assembly April 6th, same day as Toms Courtright’s birthday. 6) Candy Scramble/ Easter Egg Roll April 23th 9:30 am. Take a picture with the Easter Bunny (Greg Vaisnor). 7) Bocce Ball Challenge June 4th , Martinez, lots of food, fun and drink. 8) Concert at the Res, May 14th, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Especially need volunteers for setup and take down. Still need more prises for the raffle. Minimum $50 will be sold by each member. 9) Bill Eames gave cudo’s to Larry Blodgett and added money to Anna’s baby gift. 10) April 1st lunch costs increase for weekly pays. Mo gave a short description of what Happy $$ and Fines were for the benefit of all the guests Happy $$$$ Tom Courtright got to spend time in a car with his wife while in Hawaii due to the Tsunami evacuation. Mo Levich paid fine for missing 3 meetings. Maurice Williams fined for being late. Larry Duson fined for speaking while others were speaking. Troy Federson payed his birthday dues. Tom Henry fined for being late, but fine was waived due to he had a good reason, a leaking roof at home. Jay Lifson paid Happy $$$since Ed a garbage can on his desk and the leaking roof didn’t get on his desk. John Sherry fined for taking the #1 spot in the parking lot. Geoff Zimmerman happy $$ for his wife’s birthday. Steve Faulk Happy $$ for Accalanes HS Jazz Band being rated as one of the top bands in California. Alicia C Happy $$ for collecting lot’s of money for Anna. Mo Levich Happy $$ for a successful Jazz Festival. Thanked sponsors, Diablo Foods, Mechanics Bank, and others. John Sherry Happy $$ for Wisconsin in Sweet 16. Speaker: Introduced by Dick Holt Dr. Amer Araim Dr. Araim is President of the Islamic Community Outreach of California. SF State University Professor. Speaking on Islam in America. Iranian, came to US in 1996. Embassy with Iraq Delegation. Worked with United Nations. Lived in Long Island, NY and moved to Walnut Creek in 2001. Spoke of the 9-11 Attack for the Interfaith Counsel of Contra Costa County at a Memorial. Condemned attack but don’t condemn all of Islam. Spoke of the 5 Pillars of Muslim. The 'Five Pillars' of Islam are the foundation of Muslim life: • Faith or belief in the Oneness of God and the finality of the prophet hood of Muhammad; • Establishment of the daily prayers; • Concern for and almsgiving to the needy; • Self-purification through fasting; and • The pilgrimage to Makah for those who are able. Dr. Araim son went with him to many speaking engagements and suggested he write a book. He collected questions and has listed the 99 names for God. Spoke of Tribalism vs Religion, the Jihad, and the Koran. Raffle: $2 to Andy $65 won by Riggs who donated it back to our club. Thank you |
