| Club announcements- Alicia reminded us to be fully prepared for the Concert at the Rez in May 14, 2011. She asked us to get our raffle tickets sold and the money sent to Treasurer Greg Vaisnor. John Sherry asked us to put our names on the work schedule. Jay Lifson told us about the ‘Trust In Education’ fundraiser on the evening of May 27, 2011. Jay put a flyer on the table and suggested we see him if we wanted more information. Moe Levich told us about the Summer Music Festival. Ron Wake updated us on our Rotary Foundation and the importance of contributions. As the day was Cinco De Mayo we had a Mexican theme. The inimitable and always high-spirited Alicia Craigholm led us in a Conga Line! Fines and Happy Dollars included: Maurice Williams for his 37th anniversary. Jess Wellen for appearing on television at his workplace. Alicia Craigholm donated some Happy Dollars because she loves Rotarians. Dan Baker was happy and new garden spray protected his roses. Speaker Today’s program was introduced by Mike Heller. He brought Milt Panagatacos to the podium with a warm Rotary greeting. Milt is a physical education teacher and baseball coach at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord. Milt told us his mother played professional baseball in the Fresno area during the Second World War. He is the youngest of four boys, all of whom slept in the same room. Milt learned to be a good athlete ‘pillow-fighting’ with his older brothers. He started out as a teacher, but was laid off during the oil embargo and recession of 1974. He became a San Francisco firefighter and stayed with the department until retirement. Milt’s first love is teaching and he considers himself very fortunate that he has been able to return to it. Milt told us that sports and a very important part of a young person’s education and hopes the citizenry understands this in these difficult budget times. |
