		Rotary gets musical for a good cause
		Special invitation to the Lafayette Summer Music Workshop

The Rotary Club of Lafayette went to Stanley Middle School for its August 5, 2010 meeting. our good member Mo Levich invited us to see the Lafayette Summer Music workshop. Rotarians were able to see the wonderful work these adult music lovers and teachers are doing to advance music education in our wonderful city. Here are more details about this marvelous program.

Now in its twelfth year, the week-long Lafayette Summer Music Workshop provides an intimate and inspiring environment for learning and playing jazz. Master classes, improvisation workshops and jazz combos are led by some of the preeminent, professional musicians in the field. The workshop is directed by Stanley Middle School music director Bob Athayde and jazz curriculum director Frank Sumares. And kids – middle school, high school and college age – as well as adults have a blast!

Rotary begins plan of action in Haiti

More than six months after Haiti sustained a massive earthquake, Rotary clubs and account holders of the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund are beginning to allocate resources to help rebuild schools, provide prosthetics, and equip thousands with adequate shelter.

Despite assistance from around the world, the situation in Haiti remains bleak. An estimated 1.5 million Haitians still live in tent cities, while billions of dollars in aid from foreign countries has yet to materialize. Debris from 280,000 destroyed homes and buildings clogs the streets of Port-au-Prince.

Rotarians have contributed more than US$2 million to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, a donor advised fund set up by The Rotary Foundation.
