Past president Troy Feddersen took the reins with president-elect Greg Vaisnor monitoring the cash box and Bob A. on raffle duty.
The room was abuzz in the 20 minutes before Troy raised the gavel
Our greeter, Chris Miller, welcomed all with a big smile…
Seargant-at-Arms Anna Sullivan worked the room to pre-qualify members for happy dollars…
And everyone was eager for Rocky’s induction into the best club…

Troy kicked off the meeting by calling on Chris for the thought of the day; “you have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else”(Albert Einstein)

We had Thomas Raeth visiting from the Sunrise club and guests Jason Cragholm of Diamond Certified (Alicia), Marco Grelli of Met Life (Dino) and Shannon Robinson-Ohr.

The club then focused its attention to the induction of Rocky Termanini. This brings current club membership to 59 members.
Sponsor Mike Heller provided the mini-bio, whereupon we learned that our newly minted member lives in Rossmoor, runs for stretches of 100 miles, and is an expert in cyber security.
All that and he drives a BMW too ! Mike then listed the steps required to earn the blue badge.
Chuck, who drives a Jaguar, presented the red badge, rotary pin, embossed 4-way test, ABC’s of Rotary booklet, and member roster.

Rocky then spoke and shared that he is grateful to Mike Heller and the entire club for being friendly & welcoming.
It was then that we learned that Rocky’s father was President of the Rotary Club of Aleppo, Syria in 1959-1960.
We must all be sure to come out for Rocky’s talk to the club on 7 November. Rocky tells us that it will be “hairsplitting”.

OUR SPEAKER WAS STACEY ROBERTS, SHE IS A LITERACY ADVOCATE, WHO IS PROMOTING THE "KID SCOOP NEWS",WHICH IS BASED IN SONOMA.
SHE GAVE MANY FACTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF READING . PARTICULARLY AMONGST CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO
BOOKS AND NEWSPAPERS ON A REGULAR BASIS. THEY HAVE MANY STUDENTS WHO ARE EXCITED ABOUT BEING REPORTERS AND THE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED WELL BY VARIOUS
ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING THE 49ers. DISCUSSED WAS THE HEALTH PAGE, THE LOCAL NEWS PAGE, THE MANY ACTIVITIES THAT CHILDREN AND PARENTS COULD DO TOGETHER WHICH HAS
ENCOURAGED READING. MANY CHILDREN HAVE MENTIONED THAT GETTING THE NEWSPAPER WAS AS IF THEY WERE RECEIVING A GIFT OF A BOOK EACH MONTH.IN THE QUESTION AND ANSWER
SESSION, SHE WAS ASKED ABOUT HAVING THE PAPER ON LINE, AND SHE FELT THAT HAVING IT ON COMPUTER WAS NOT AS GOOD AS HAVING IT IN THEIR HANDS BECAUSE HAVING IT IN HAND
REPLICATED READING A BOOK. THEY ARE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT THEIR ADVERTISERS, ALWAYS NEED SPONSORS, AND THE NEWSPAPER IS DISTRIBUTED TO OVER 700 TEACHERS , DOES NOT
KNOW THE PRECISE NUMBER IN ALL COMMUNITIES, BUT SAID IT GOES TO 58 SCHOOLS IN OAKLAND AND 35 IN FREMONT. ONE OF STACY'S IDEAS IS TO HAVE IT AVAILABLE AT PIZZA PARLOURS SO THAT PARENTS AND CHILDREN CAN READ AND DO THE ACTIVITES WHILE WAITING FOR THEIR PIZZAS. SHE IS HOPING TO ACHIEVE THAT GOAL IN THE FUTURE.

Rotary helped put polio eradication on center stage on the day best known for rallying support to finish the job – World Polio Day, 24 October.

A special Livestream presentation  –  World Polio Day: Making History – showcased the progress of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Co-hosted by Rotary and the Northwestern University Center for Global Health, the 60-minute program took place before a live audience at the John Hughes Auditorium on Northwestern’s Chicago campus and streamed online to viewers worldwide.

RI President Ron Burton kicked off the event by noting that Rotary began immunizing millions of children against polio in the 1970s, first in the Philippines and then in other high-risk countries.
